For rescue from height, fall arrest and manriding (suspended) applications, EN795 Certified

This type of light weight portable davit lifting arm is mainly manufactured from galvanized mild steel though can also be manufactured from aluminium or stainless steel if required. Many of our customers from the offshore oil and gas industries utilise our davits in either aluminium or stainless steel as the working environment demands.

Stainless steel lifting davit arms are utilised by food production industries. We can also supply hoists to suit these davit cranes which use stainless steel load chain, to ensure we meet the lifting and handling requirements of our customers environment in a safe and standard compliant manner.

We can manufacture all of our special davit arm jib cranes to our customers specification (height of lift and reach) and are designed for the lifting of materials and / or for the lifting of people (manriding application), for lifting applications the davit arm’s can be supplied up to 1000kg safe working load (SWL).
We recommend that the davits are not dual certified and that if a davit is used for manriding, fall arrest or rescue applications then it is not used for lifting materials. Keep the two disciplines separate and this way there is less chance that the davit is mistreated when lifting material then relied on for performing a rescue.

To help users comply with the manual handling regulations, our davit arms are made in three sections, this ensures that the davits are easily transportable when they are to be used in more than one location. This offers a cost effective solution to lifting problems, because it means that one portable davit lifting arm can be purchased and used in multiple locations (across a single site or a number of sites).

The drawings below give a basic indication of the style and size of davits available, though as all our davit arm cranes are made to order the specification can be changed to meet your individual specification.

We offer several socket options for our davit arms, please see the drawings below to select the most suitable option.

The products of Selby Engineering and Lifting Safety are first choice for specifiers and engineers worldwide. Our davit sockets are used extensively in the chemical, water treatment and offshore oil and gas industries. We have a wealth of experience in the development of all types of individual davits and sockets for numerous applications.

Davit Types

Man riding winch and Inertia reel c/w integrated rescue winchMan riding winch and Inertia reel c/w integrated rescue winch

In our opinion this is the best configuration for manriding applications (suspended work at height) because it is the correct configuration of equipment to safely provide means of access and egress; i.e. getting winched  into the working position and getting back out again, suspended using the Manriding winch.
When a person is suspended while working at height there is the always a risk of falling (equipment / winch failure) and therefore there is a legal requirement to provide further equipment of arresting a potential fall (a fall arrest plan) and also a legal requirement to provide means to rescue the casualty (rescue plan). The rescue plan needs to cover any reasonable eventuality. With this davit set-up for working at height, should the manriding winch fail, the inertia reel will automatically arrest the fall. This inertia reel has an integrated rescue winch which will then be used to rescue the casualty, raising or lowering them to safety.
It should be noted that the integrated rescue winch built into this fall arrest inertia reel must not be used as a man riding winch (for access or egress). - it is a means of rescue in the event of an emergency only.

Manriding winch and Inertia reel (no integrated rescue winch)

Manriding winch and Inertia reel (no integrated rescue winch)

We suggest that you use the option above for suspended working at height - Man riding winch and Inertia reel c/w integrated rescue winch. This configuration is similar to the above, however because the inertia reel does not feature an integrated rescue winch, there is not a means of rescue in the event of a winch failure. The casualty would be left suspended and subject to the effects of suspension trauma and the potential of death.
Therefore although you would have a fall arrest plan you would not have a rescue plan as required by law.

Fall arrest inertia reel with integrated rescue (retrieval) winch

Fall arrest inertia reel with integrated rescue (retrieval) winch

This scenario will enable a person to gain access / egress to the chamber (confined space etc) by climbing down a fixed vertical ladder.
In the event of the person falling from the ladder, the fall will be immediately arrested by the inertia reel block. You must assume that the worker cannot self rescue (step back on to the ladder and climb out), for example having suffered a broken limb or heart attack. The rescuer will then retrieve the casualty with the inertia reels built-in rescue winch. Thus providing a rescue plan.
Please note that the In-Built winching facility provided by this type of inertia reel can only be used for emergency rescue of a casualty and must not be used for suspended work at height.

Inertia Reel only

Inertia Reel only

This configuration covers only fall arrest. There is no winch for access or egress, and no means of rescue (no rescue plan). For example: it should not be assumed that a person falling from a fixed ladder is capable of self rescue (fall arrested by the inertia reel) - Think; if a worker suffers a heart attack he would be left suspended with no system in place for others to effect a rescue. A rescue plan is required by law for persons working in a fall arrest scenario.

Man riding Winch only

Man riding Winch only

This configuration is only suitable for rescue situations.
The manriding winch on its own cannot be used to lift a person for access and egress because there is no provision for fall arrest or rescue in the event of a winch failure.
