Chain Hoists; Manual, Electric, Air
Chain hoists are among the most widely used pieces of lifting equipment in the industry, essential for raising and lowering machinery, materials, or equipment. They operate by lifting loads vertically with a hook attached to a chain, which can be powered manually, electrically, pneumatically, or hydraulically.
Sometimes called chain blocks, these hoists can be customised for various lifting needs. They are offered in several different formats, including lever hoists (also known as a pull-lift/pul-lift or lever lifts), manual or hand chain hoists, electric chain hoists, air hoists (pneumatic-powered), and hydraulic hoists.
A chain hoist or chain block can serve as a permanent fixture for regular lifting tasks in the same area or as a temporary solution for occasional lifts at different locations. All our chain-type lifting hoists are designed to be easily attached to a beam trolley, which can either be manually operated or equipped with powered travel through electric, air, or hydraulic means.
The load is typically secured to the bottom of the chain via a lifting hook block, although some manufacturers now offer alternative hoist fittings such as clevis shackles and egg links.
At LiftingSafety, we also provide various styles of wire rope hoists, which are especially useful on wind farms and construction sites (like scaffold hoists) where mobility is crucial, or in high-demand industrial settings like runway or crane bridge wire rope hoists where robust durability is necessary.

Hand operated ratchet lever hoists or lever chain hoists are also known within industry as pull lifts (originally the term Pul-Lift name came to life with the invention of the Yale D85 and C85 as early back as 1936 - To date, over 1-million original Yale Pul-lifts have been sold) because they are not only used to lift a load, they are also used to pull, separate, tension and hold a load. They are a very versatile piece of lifting equipment and are often preferred over a manual chain block because of the ease in quickly altering the hook position (when not under load), with the free-wheel function that is unique to the lever hoist and within our range you can find ratchet lever hoists from the likes of Yale, Tiger Lifting, Kito, Hackett, Tractel, Pfaff and Hadef, among others, all with this as a standard feature.
We offer you a great choice online in the hope that we will have at least hoist from the afore mentioned manufacturers that will suit our customers' requirements. The lever hoists that we offer are made from many different materials such as a pressed steel body, cast iron body and aluminium construction. The height of lift can be to our customers' requirements and we can offer with special key features, for example with Atex protection and/or specifically designed for subsea and offshore use. Please contact us if you need any assistance in choosing the most appropriate option.
Hand operated manual chain hoists (also commonly known as a chain block or block and tackle) are a piece of portable lifting equipment available in versatile configurations; they are very adaptable to the many alternative working scenarios and working environments including permanent and temporary installations. Available in capacities ranging from 250kg all the way up to 100 tonnes, the chain hoist is adaptable to the greater majority of lifting applications or situations.
We offer hand chain hoists from many of the worlds top quality manufacturers including Yale, Tiger Lifting, Kito, Tractel, Hadef and William Hackett’s and we are constantly adding new manufacturers to our range of chain blocks, meaning that even more features and options are continually becoming available.
Hand chain blocks can be supplied with top hook suspension or with an integrated trolley be it push travel or geared chain drive for use on a monorail lifting beam.
We also offer a specialist range of hand chain hoists such as atex rated for use in potentially explosive areas that have anti-sparking features to prevent an explosion or ROV Subsea chain hoists that are specially designed for operation by a remote operated vehicle under water.
LiftingSafety offer in our online shop/catalogue a range of electric chain hoists to suit most applications from many of the leading quality hoist manufacturers including Yale, Stahl, Hadef, Donati, Tractel, Verlinde, Kito and many more.
Options available on the electric chain hoists that we offer are very similar to that of the manual hand chain hoist with the addition of powered motions as opposed to requiring manual effort to raise or travel the load along a crane or runway beam.
Our electric hoists are fitted as standard with a top hook or lug suspension, but can also be supplied with an integrated manual or electric powered beam trolley that can be controlled by a push button pendant or by radio remote control. Options are available with slow, fast or variable lifting speeds and hoists can be supplied to suit a variety of different voltages / power supplies with bespoke hoists also available, suitable for different environments (offshore, cleanroom, wet and/or dusty etc. IP55, IP65, IP66 for example), dependant on user requirements.
We can also offer specialist application hoists that have been specifically designed for use on wind turbines and Atex areas.
We appreciate that an electric hoist can represent a sizable investment and so if you are even a little unsure as to the most appropriate type or model, then please contact our sales or technical staff who will assist you accordingly.
Air hoists which are also known as Pneumatic hoists and also referred to as compressed air hoists are similar in features to electric chain hoists except the hoist is powered by a compressed air supply. A main advantage of an air hoist is that they are 100% duty cycle meaning they are suitable for constant use and for long lift heights where an electric motor would overheat.
Air hoists are usually supplied hook suspended but can also be supplied with an integrated beam trolley. They operated by push button pendant or by cord control. Air hoists are a more cost-effective solution when ATEX certification is needed, far cheaper than the equivalent electric hoist and are more suited to applications in harsh environments which is why they are the hoist of preference in the off-shore oil and gas producing and maintenance sectors.
As with other lifting chain hoist the Pneumatic hoists supplied by us are all from top quality manufacturers; these include Red Rooster, Yale, JDN, Ingersoll Rand, Atlas Copco and JD Neuhaus.
Hydraulic chain hoists are very similar in features to Pneumatic hoists except the hoist is powered by hydraulic oil as opposed to being powered by a compressed air line. The main advantages of the hydraulic lifting chain hoist is the same as Pneumatic chain hoist in that they are both 100% duty cycle. What this means is that the hydraulic powered chain hoists are suitable for constant use such as in a production environments, it also means that they are suitable for long heights of lift where an electric motor would overheat. Hydraulic chain hoists can be supplied with variable lifting speed, the more the operator depresses the button the greater the amount of hydraulic fluid passed by the valve and the faster the hoist will raise or lower. Because there is no electric power source air hoists are also more suitable for use in potentially explosive areas where a spark can cause an explosion. Hydraulic chain hoists can more cost effective solution when Atex certification is needed, far cheaper than the equivalent electric Atex hoist and are more suited to applications in harsh environments which is why they are the hoist of preference in the off shore oil and gas producing and maintenance sectors. We also offer hydraulic subsea hoists designed to be operated under water. As with other lifting chain hoist the hydraulic hoists supplied by LiftingSafety are all from a top quality manufacturer JDN (JD Neuhaus)
In this category we offer accessories for lifting hoists of all types. These accessories are to be used in conjunction with our hoists to make the lifting procedure easier and/or safer for the operator or those in the working area. Radio remote control means that the operator can get a clearer view of the hoisting path ensuring that the way ahead is always clear and the hoisting operation is safe. We produced power supply festoon systems for all hoists; electric chain hoists; Compressed air and hydraulic hoist. Our festoon system is trolleys that run in track or spring recoil power supply festoon systems. Other accessories include lifting baskets Lifting buckets, hosting wheel barrows and probably the most overloaded in this category being our LiftingSafety power converters. These unique products convert single phase eclectic supplies into 3Ph 415v which means that our customers can operate 3 phase electric lifting hoists when only a 230v single phase power supply is available.
