The Different Types of Eye Bolts and Nuts for Lifting or Lashing

Lifting eye bolts and eye nuts are also commonly known in the lifting industry as lifting eyes, lifting points, hoist rings or load rings. They can be either fixed position (non-rotating) or swivel eye bolts and are available in a wide range of metric and imperial thread sizes and forms, as well as being produced from either high grade, high tensile steel or stainless steel. Each type of lifting point or eye bolt can vary in shape or size including the likes of DIN standard eye bolts/nuts, BS4278 standard collar eye bolts, ISO3266 (similar to BS 4278), EN1677-1 lifting points, long shank, dynamo type and eye bolts with built-in oval links or rings.

Eye Bolt Types and Capacity Options

At LiftingSafety we offer a wide variety of eye bolt styles to ensure we have the right fit for our customer's applications.

Our stainless steel lifting eye bolts for example are ideal for environments where corrosion could be a concern. These can be based on the traditional BS4278 collared eye bolt or the now increasingly more prominent EN 1677-1 swivel type, where the eye of the lifting point can automatically rotate to the direction of the lift or pull. Because of this capability, a swivelling stainless steel lifting point (this applies to all EN 1677-1 type lifting points, not just stainless) has a significantly higher capacity than that of a standard collared eyebolt, which in reality must be de-rated for any lifts that are angled away from a true vertical lift.

DIN 580 eye bolts, DIN 582 eye nuts, and BS3974 bows are also among our offerings. They all have physically larger lifting eyes than a traditional BS4278/ISO3266 eye bolt but are rated with lower safe working loads.

If you are looking for an eye bolt with both a larger eye and a higher capacity, then we would recommend looking into our range of swivel eye bolts. These are rated with significantly higher SWL's and at the worst-case scenario (side loading), with true vertical lifts typically seeing an increased capacity rating.

Specialist Eye Bolt Clamps

Additionally, we have specially manufactured bolt-on eye bolt plates for I-beams or H-beams that can be used for both permanent and temporary installations, allowing you to create a lifting point by clamping to an overhead beam.

Container Lifting Eyes

In this category, we also feature ISO container lifting eyes, also known as container lifting lugs, that aren't threaded but are designed specifically for the direct connection to the top, side, or bottom of ISO shipping containers which are secured in place through rotation.
